The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley has announced that Linda Her has been named TRIO Coordinator for the Menasha Joint School District portion of the federal TRiO grant program. She will divide her time between Menasha's Maplewood Middle School and Menasha High School and will be working with TRIO students in the sixth through the twelfth grades. In addition, Her will also be working with TRIO graduates who are now enrolled at UWFox.

Her grew up in Kaukauna and graduated from Kaukauna HS. She received her bachelor's degree from St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN), where she was a TRiO student. As a St. Olaf student, she had the opportunity to study in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and New York City. After graduating from college, she returned to the Fox Cities as an Americorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) for the Bright Beginnings Family-School-Community Partnerships Program at Lincoln Elementary School in Appleton. She eventually enrolled at Marian University and earned an Elementary Teaching License.

"As a child of refugee parents, I grew up believing that an education was a gift and also my key to becoming successful. I share this belief with my students and hope to encourage and advocate for them like those before did for me," Her said. "Being a former TRiO student, I understand the need for these programs and the struggles TRiO participants face."

The UWFox TRiO Educational Talent Search is a multi-year grant 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education in the amount of $230,000 per grant year that's managed by UWFox. It's designed to attract to the program first generation and/or low income students from grades six to 12 in the Menasha Joint School District and the Kaukauna Area School District.

UWFox is one of the 13 campuses that comprise the UW Colleges and is part of the 26-campus UW System. For more information about the TRiO program, contact TRiO Director Tammie Blaney at 920-832-0111 or email tammie.blaney@uwc.edu. Her can be reached at 832-0102 or via email at linda.her@uwc.edu.
