The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, Office of Continuing Education is introducing, “Ready · Set · Discover,” an exploratory program for first and second graders that gives children a chance to “discover” themselves through a variety of interactive, hands-on learning activities. “Ready · Set · Discover” is being held on June 21, 22 and 23, from 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
For six-year old Kyle Immel of Appleton, a first-grader at Horizons School, it’s a great fit for his interests, skills, and age group, according to his mother, Kathy. “Kyle was so impressed when his older sister participated in the summer programs at UWFox last year. He really wanted to have as much fun as she did, with all the activities she got to experience and talk about when she got home. She would be singing and dancing, and showing us her latest art project. She had a real blast.
“I was especially attracted to ‘Ready · Set · Discover’ for Kyle because it offers a wide variety of creative and participative program activities, like music, science, technology, and art, so conveniently. Things will move quickly enough to keep him interested and he’ll really enjoy all the hands-on activities,” Immel said. “The time of the day that ‘Ready · Set · Discover’ is being offered is a good time period for Kyle, too.”
For example, during one afternoon of “Ready · Set · Discover” children will explore the world of art by stretching their creativity through experimenting with various art forms and media. Another afternoon challenges children with a variety of creative science activities and projects that they can touch, see, hear and taste. On a third afternoon the child will double his/her fun and have the opportunity to split their time between music and technology. The music and movement session combines a variety of music concepts and numerous movement games to achieve an experience that will get them up and active. The technology portion of the afternoon has the children working with age-appropriate software to create a project.
