The University of Wisconsin - Fox Valley has named Mike Gallus the new Athletic Director at the Menasha campus. He replaces Tom Herrmann, who stepped down from the position this past May. Gallus earned his B.A. from North Central College (Naperville, IL), and his M.S. from UW-Superior.

Gallus has spent over 20 years in the Fox Cities. His coaching tenure at Lawrence University saw him make many contributions to their athletic program, including: Assistant Football Coach, 1974-1990; initiated Women’s Basketball in 1975, and coached that sport from 1975-1979; founded women’s softball in 1984, and coached it from 1984-1991; served as head men’s basketball coach, 1979-1991.

He also "jump-started" the UWFox women’s basketball program in 1996. Gallus became the UWFox men’s head basketball coach in 1998; he presently continues in that role.

Gallus’ coaching credentials extend beyond the Fox Cities. He has been involved on the international scene as well. In 1979, he coached a U.S. women’s all-star team against the Danish Junior Women’s Champion team. In 1981, he brought Ammerud, men’s and women’s Norwegian basketball teams, to Appleton to play games against Wisconsin collegiate competition. -

He also spent 12 summers in the nations of Denmark and Sweden coaching at basketball camps. Included in this experience was a 1980-81 stint at the "Federation Camp" in Aahrus, Denmark, and at the "International Basketball School" in Tyringe, Sweden, from 1982-1990.

During his basketball coaching tenure at Lawrence, he frequently organized "Christmas Vacation Basketball/EducationalTrips" for the men’s basketball team for a week during the break between semesters. The student athletes’ trips were made to Tampa- St. Petersburg, FL (1979, 1987); Guadalupe, French West Indies ((1980); Orlando, FL (1981-1984-1989-1992); Anchorage, AK (1982); Miami, FL (1983, 1991); Boston, MA (1985); Washington, D.C. (1986); Los Angeles, CA (1988); Phoenix, AZ (1990); St. Louis, MO (1993).

The new UWFox AD explains his short-term and long-range goals are influenced by the positive experiences of his coaching past. "While I was at Lawrence University, I had an opportunity to work with, observe, and coach against some of the most professional, caring, helpful, and friendly Athletic Directors and/or basketball coaches in the Midwest Conference."

Citing Jack Thurnblad of Carleton College, Bill Knapton of Beloit College, Harley Knosher at Knox College, and Ron Roberts of Lawrence, Gallus feels that they were "tremendous role models for students, athletes, and fellow coaches. If I can be 75% of the leader that they were, then UWFox will be in good hands."

Specifically, Gallus sets his immediate sights on "initiating a fall, 1999 coed soccer program, and recruiting quality student athletes "that want to run, press, and shoot ‘3’s’ for the men’s 1999-2000 basketball program," at the freshman-sophomore UWFox campus.
