Background before UWFox

I graduated from Winnecone HS in 2002.  After I graduated, I joined the United States Marine Corps and lived on-base at Parris Island, South Carolina for a year. This experience was brief because I had an injury. Before that I traveled often with family and friends all over the United States and once in Mexico on a mission trip. After being discharged from the USMC, I worked locally at BioLife Plasma Services and Thrivent Financial.

Why did you choose UWFox?

I chose UWFox because I had friend who shared with me her experiences at the campus. Through my own experiences UWFox exceeded all my expectations, including strong academics, available help if needed, the ability to talk with professors, opportunities to participate/work with the school, and being close to home.

Have you chosen a major?

Biology

What are you learning that you find interesting and rewarding at UWFox?

I find it most interesting that UWFox sparked my desire for learning. Prior to coming to college here I struggled as a student and found the process of learning difficult and dull. The teachers I had at UWFox made me feel important as a student and enabled me to have the right tools to tackle learning. In turn being tested on what I learn, I discovered that I too can be successful when I put my mind to it. That is incredibly rewarding to me, giving me the drive to keep it up. Another opportunity I find rewarding is being a UWFox Ambassador. I’ve been in this position for two years and I really enjoy giving tours of the campus, hosting events, and talking to potential or new students.

What are your career plans after UWFox?

After I UWFox I plan to transfer to UW Oshkosh and earn my bachelor’s degree. From there I want to go to Bastyr University in Washington state, an accredited institution internationally recognized as a pioneer in natural medicine, to study midwifery. My career plans are to become a midwife and care for families. My dream is to return the kindness I experienced from UWFox , my midwife Marcia Ten Haken, who helped in expanding my own family, and also those who supported me through my education.

Other interesting things about yourself that you’d like to share?

I have three wonderful children (6, 5, 3).  I enjoy exercising, fishing, and nature. I love learning Spanish. This past summer I took a study abroad trip to Spain - it was incredible.  I love traveling and do so at any opportunity. I am excited to bring my children with me to WA as I continue my education and share with them the adventure of life.
