Hometown: New London, WI
Current residence: Oshkosh, WI
When attended UWFox: Fall 2007 to Spring 2009
Background before UWFox:
I attended New London High School and graduated in Spring 2007. Prior to attending UWFox, I worked as a lifeguard supervisor at Jellystone Park in Fremont. I taught swimming lessons at New London Community Pool during high school and taught gymnastics through the New London Parks and Recreation Department for four years. I also volunteered to help with events in the community.
Why did you choose UWFox?
I chose to go to UWFox because I wanted to be able to work and stay closer to home. I also had family members who started their college education at UWFox, and I heard good things about the campus from them. I thought I would see for myself.
Have you chosen a major?
I am majoring in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations, and a minor in Psychology, and have been on the Dean’s List at UW-Oshkosh for the two semesters I’ve attended there.
What are you learning that you find interesting and rewarding at UWFox?
Presently as an intern in the University Relations department at UWFox, I’m now finding that being on the “staff” side of campus life is very enlightening. When I was a student there I didn’t pay much attention to the details involving the campus – I was focused on going to classes, getting my degree and meeting new people. I’m now learning the history of UWFox and viewing the campus with a new perspective.
As a student at UWFox I really enjoyed being involved in campus life. I was a reporter for the campus newspaper and eventually became its copy editor. I was a member of Sigma Kappa Delta [English Honor Society], Phi Theda Kappa [national academic honor society], received the UWFox 2009 Journalism Department Award and was on the campus Dean's List three of my four semesters.
I was selected to be a student keynote speaker at the fall 2008 UWFox Convocation, and was also a student guest panelist for several campus College Preview panel discussions.
Now that I am on the staff side of college life, I’m happy to be involved with the UW-Fox Valley Foundation’s e.a.t.s. planning committee, and I am looking forward to further expanding my knowledge about the campus and the events that take place both here and in the community.
What are your career plans after UWFox?
I plan to graduate from UW-Oshkosh with my B.S. in Public Relations and then go on to work for a public relations agency. I prefer working somewhere on the West Coast, but I will apply in NE Wisconsin area as well.
Other interesting things you’d like to share?
I coach gymnastics at a competitive level at Heart of the Valley YMCA, and have been doing so for two years.
I’ve been freelancing for Journal Community Publishing Group in Waupaca and New London and was the editor of a summer newspaper that promoted Waupaca's Chain O' Lakes. As the editor, I took photos, wrote features, and did the editing before the final product went to press. I’ve also had articles published in "On the Water" and "Marketplace" magazines.
