Current program: Secondary Education
Why did you choose UWFox?
I chose UWFox because I live in Seymour, and it saves on time, money and fuel.
Outside of being a college student, what takes up your free time?
I’m speaker of the Student Association (SA) Senate. I just started going to CRU, but with my class load, SA and being a father of six I keep pretty busy!
Who is your favorite professor and why?
I’m biased because I like history, so I like my history professors. One who is unique is Dr. Jeff Filipiak. Dr. Filipiak teaches without a noticeable political bias, which tells me the material he presents is important and shows that he has integrity toward his chosen profession. Also, people, places and dates are easy for me, but math is a foreign language. Professor Kathy Hopper, my pre-algebra teacher, was patient, thorough and really cared whether you succeeded or not.
What is one thing at UWFox that no student should miss?
I like any form of representative governance, and I think if more students would get involved in Student Association, they would benefit from it. It encompasses everything on campus, from how things are funded to activities that are done throughout campus.
What are three things you have on you at all times on campus?
My glasses, my wallet and my rolling suitcase for my books.
What is your dream job after graduation?
My dream job would be to be the mayor of Appleton, because I believe the City of Appleton to be the best city in all of Wisconsin. That said, I am realistically hoping to become a history or civics teacher in a junior high or high school setting in an inner city area. I love history because it’s people, places, dates and stories that need to be told. It’s very relevant. I want to teach kids who are struggling and need mentors.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming UWFox students?
Take advantage of your education, especially if you’re paying for it. When you take into account the interest that so many of us with student loans are looking at, every day is more expensive than the last. It doesn’t make sense to get Cs if you think about what you’re paying to attend classes.
