The 73rd Annual Tri-State Geological Field Conference and Great Lakes Section-SEPM Fall Field Conference will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley in Menasha, WI. The theme of the field trip is “The Story of Fire, Water, and Ice” and will focus on the diverse geological treasures in eastern and central Wisconsin.  Planned stops include a Precambrian batholith at Redgranite with metabasalt dikes, early Paleozoic sedimentary rock plateaus such as Ship Rock, exposures of mid- to late Ordovician sedimentary rocks and fossils, the Johnstown Moraine and other Wisconsin Episode glacial landforms, the Glover Bluff Meteorite Impact site, and an optional stop along an oxbow lake at Mosquito Hill.  The trip will also include a visit to the Weis Earth Science Museum, the Official State Mineralogical Museum of Wisconsin located on the UW-Fox Valley campus.

Trip Registration Fee: $85 for professionals, $75 for current students

Important Information

  • Planned sites for Saturday, Oct. 7 include Devens Quarry (early Paleozoic sedimentary rock), Redgranite Quarry Lake, Glover Bluff Impact Site, Ship Rock, and Meyer Pit (Wisconsin Episode glacial materials).
  • Planned sites for optional car caravan trip on Sunday, Oct. 8 include Cactus Rock and Mosquito Hill Nature Center.
  • The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley is located at 1478 Midway Rd., Menasha, WI.  You can view driving directions and a detailed campus map online.
  • Registration for this conference will close on September 29, 2017.

For those participants who would prefer camping, the nearest campsites to UW-Fox Valley are at High Cliff State Park in Sherwood, WI and Calumet County Park near Stockbridge, WI.  These are popular campgrounds, so it is important that you have a reservation and make it early!
