The Guys

By Annie Nelson
The GuysUWFox Theatre presents a tribute to the heroes of 9/ll in their production of The Guys. Fifteen years later we still reflect on the impact that these events had on our life and country. Less than two weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He's looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms—and the enduring bonds of common
humanity. THE GUYS is based on a true story. (Reader’s Theatre)

What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? In this richly spare, wondrous new play, Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits — if any — of what technology can replace. 2015 Pulitzer Prize Finalist.

I and You

By Lauren Gunderson

I and YouOne afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline's door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together. I and You is an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.

"I'm not sure when the last time I went to a live theater performance and left it thinking 'I need to tell everyone about this!' That's the way I feel about I and You." Jane Sutter, Democrat & Chronicle
