Level 3
Lift Payloads & Investigate Deep Space

2008 Session

Aug 4-8, 9 a.m.-Noon

After completing Wisconsin Space Academy Level Two, Cadets may enroll in Level Three.  Level Three builds on lessons already learned and includes a simulation of a realistic astronaut mission to Mars, in which the Cadets are in charge of Mission Control.  Cadets also build and launch payload-capable rockets (and try to recover them in one piece!) and research their own planetarium show.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN.

Download and print our online registration form, or contact the planetarium (920-832-2868, barlowplanetarium@uwc.edu) for printed enrollment materials.  Space is limited; early registration is advised.  We will make every effort to give Cadets their first choice of sessions, which are filled on first-come, first served basis.

In Wisconsin Space Academy III, activities include:

Hands-On Activities
Build a multi-stage model rocket with payload capabilities, fly it and attempt to recover payloads undamaged
Use an astrolabe to measure rocket altitude

Computer Activities
Research an astronomy topic on the Internet (all activities are supervised)
Calculate rocket altitudes and other flight data

Planetarium Activities
Learn the characteristics of stars
Learn about special objects (nebulae, clusters, galaxies) and they are observed
Cadets create their own show to be presented on Family Night (Topic: Observing Cosmic Wonders)

Classroom Activities
Basic rocketry, including safe launch and recovery procedures
Determine how payloads affect a rocket's performance
Learn basic physics principles related to payloads
Learn about careers in space exploration

Special Activity
Simulated Space Mission allows members of the class to act as mission science specialists, managing Mission Control and attempting to send a spacecraft on an actual mission.

Family Night
Thursday night of each Wisconsin Space Academy session
Cadets present their own show in the Barlow Planetarium
Cadets fly their rockets (weather permitting)
