2008 Soccer Season
The 2008 soccer season starts August 18th. The cyclones have seven returning players from last year’s team. The team finished second in conference and third in State and had five players awarded all conference. We had two players awarded all state honors and the WCC conference most valuable Player, in Grant Larie. Four of the all conference players are returning for a second season while Kurt Fecteau, a two year starter, finished his career and was a second team all conference outside left midfielder. Kurt moved on to a Division III school.
All conference MVP, all state and all conference forward, first team player Grant Larie, is returning for a second year. Other players returning along with Grant are; Kyle Seemeyer, all state, first team all conference midfielder, Dylan Korth, second team all conference forward, and Matt Stori, all conference honorable mention defensive midfielder.
Last year’s cyclone team finished 11-6, scoring 67 goals in 17 games. They averaged almost 4 goals per game and gave up about 2 goals per game. The Cyclones lost three games early in the season all by the score of 2-1. All were hard fought games the saw a lot of domination by the cyclones but they were unable to score. The team gelled after the 2-3 start and managed to run the table for the rest of the season until the conference finals, losing to conference champion UW-Waukesha. Their final loss of the season came against eventual state Champion and number 6th ranked nationally, Madison Area Technical College.
UW Fox Valley has eight returning starters for next season and is looking for players to fill in the spots left open by students moving on to four year schools. UW Fox lost its superb goalie, Pat Belling and starting sweeper, Grant Nelton. Outside midfielder, Kurt Fecteau, 2006 first team all conference defender Joe McPhetridge and second team all conference midfielder William Marcks. Alyssa Way, who holds the record for most points scored in season and career by a woman, moves on to a four year school. Their departure leaves openings in several key areas for Coach Lance Gordon to fill.
UW Fox Valley needs to recruit a goalie to challenge last year’s back up Goalie, Lucas Hedtke for a starting spot. The team also needs to acquire depth at outside midfielder both at outside right and left. Casey Clements will push inside leaving the outside midfield position thin with only Dan Evers and Justin Hanson returning from last season. Defense is also a major concern for next season. The sweeper spot is open and there is no depth at outside defender. Nick Wire and Evan Mathison played outstanding last season as outside defenders, but needed depth at those positions would have helped towards a conference and state championships.
The 2008 Cyclones is looking like another great season of soccer which should see us challenge once again for the conference and state title.
