ANT 370 - Archaeology Field School, 4 Credits, June 5-June 23, 2006

Practical application of the basic skills used in the excavation of archaeological sites, including surveying techniques, methods of excavation, compilation of field data, and laboratory analysis through participation in an actual archaeological field project. Prereq: Previous anthropology course and consent of instructor via the attached application; ANT 102 or introductory archaeology course is highly recommended. AP/EL

Marinette ExcavationThe 2006 field school will take place at a Late Paleo-Indian and Archaic archaeological site on a farm in Trempealeau County, Western Wisconsin. Students are responsible for their own lodging, meals, and transportation to and from the site. A location for camping near the site will be provided. However, students will need to bring their own camping equipment. Bathrooms and running water is available at the campground. Showers and access to a swimming pool are available for a daily fee. Students must be in good health and must be capable of performing strenuous outdoor labor ten hours per day, five days per week and Saturday, June 11th. Additional laboratory time may be required in the evenings and at least one field trip is planned to another site in the region. Students are expected to put in 160 hours of field and lab time in order to earn four credits.

Space is limited to twelve students. Admission will be on a competitive basis and a special application is required for consideration (see below) in addition to the standard UW application. Students will be notified by May 9 if they have been accepted into the course.
